The Excel Convert Function

Excel has a very useful function called CONVERT. The Excel CONVERT function converts a number from one measurement to another measurement. You can convert grams to ounces, kilograms to pounds, Celsius to Fahrenheit or vice versa and there are a range of other metrics inside the convert function.

The syntax is as follows:

=CONVERT (number, from_unit, to_unit)

The CONVERT formula can be broken down into the following components.

  • number - The numeric value to convert.

  • from_unit - The units to convert from.

  • to_unit - The units to convert to.

A Practical Example

Take the following list of cities with temperatures in Celsius, these can be converted to Fahrenheit with no knowledge of the conversion factor. Just knowing the CONVERT function is enough.

Many Useful Examples

The following may give you some food for thought on the topic. The conversion can be done either way, you decide.

Metres to Yards =CONVERT(100,"m","yd")
Metres to Feet =CONVERT(100,"m","ft")
Pounds to Grams =CONVERT(100,"lbm","g") - to generate a conversion in kilos just divide result by 1000.
 Joule to Calories =CONVERT(100,"J","cal")
Bit to Byte =CONVERT(100,"bit","byte")

The following is from Microsoft’s website. It shows the depth of analysis one can do with the CONVERT function in Excel. It is an extensive list and allows so many variable conversions.
